No, I didn’t qualify for Boston or anything crazy like that. What I’ve done is something many of you do all the time. For years I’ve thought about doing what I’ve done but I resisted. Despite other runners telling me I should change, I didn’t until recently but I’m stubborn like that.
I’ve become a morning runner. OK, go ahead and roll your eyes and say, “Is that all?” For me, though, this is a big thing. Like I said, for years I resisted. Instead of running before work, I would run after work. For much of the year, that was fine, except during the heart of summer when the highs for the day reached the 90’s, and of course the heat of the day coincided when I was running. I’ve always run my long run on Saturday mornings but I would never set my alarm early and get out at something crazy like 5 am.
I love my sleep and I didn’t want to have to get up at crazy-o-clock in the morning so I could run before work. But then I had an epiphany- I could just wear my running clothes to work, run there, shower, and go on with my day. We’re lucky enough to have not one shower stall at work but four shower stalls in two separate bathrooms. They’re clean and I’ve never had to wait while someone else was using one (I’ve used them in the past occasionally when I’d run after lunch). Why the heck wouldn’t I take advantage of such a great perk?
So one morning I tried it. I woke up at my usual time, packed a bag full of my work clothes, shampoo and the rest of my shower things, a towel and washcloth, and everything else I needed to get ready for the day. I ate breakfast at home, drove to work, ran, showered, and went on with my day. Hmmmm, not bad but I could do better. A couple of days later I laid out my running clothes and shoes, packed my work clothes and shower things the night before, and ate a Honey Stinger Cracker ‘N Nut Butter bar in the car on my way to work. Much better this time.
On my fourth day of running in the morning before work I started noticing a few things. My times were definitely faster when I would run in 60-something degrees versus 80-something degrees (no surprise there). I also was able to finish my run, shower, and get on with my day before all but one other person from my group at work even got to work, so certainly no one even noticed anything different in my work schedule. If I needed to, I could always work a little later in the evening because I wouldn’t need to hurry home to get in my run before dinner.
More importantly, I started noticing how much I enjoy being outside in the early morning. There are less cars on the roads so it’s noticeably quieter and there are more birds out, which I enjoy. It’s hard to put a finger on, but mornings just feel a bit different. I also really like having the evening completely free to do whatever I want. Instead of rushing home, changing into my running clothes, going for a run, making and eating dinner, stretching and foam rolling, I can now take my time getting home. I also am not running when it’s super hot outside, which is great!
So it seems I may have been converted to a morning runner after all of those years of fighting it. I have to admit I probably won’t run all four of my weekly runs in the morning, however, although I’ll continue running my long runs in the morning like I always have. I’ll probably still run 1 or 2 days a week in the evenings because I’m not 100% converted (yet, although that may change when it’s July!).
What about you- are you a morning runner or do you prefer to run in the evening? Do you think I’m crazy for just now changing so I run some of my runs in the mornings?
Happy running!
Donna
welcome to the club… and such a good idea! i also have showers at work but in never occurred to me to use them this way. i bet you could also use a bike commuting trick i like and do bag-lady monday— bring all your clothes and food for the week so you’re out the door faster, and just keep a get-ready kit in your desk. happy morning running!

That’s a great idea to bring everything for the week. I’ve done that with lunches but haven’t thought to just leave a get-ready kit at work. Thanks for the suggestions!

I’m actually jealous that you could run after work. I’m much better at running in the morning but can’t squeeze it in during a working week. I’ve done some runs during lunch break because even that is preferable to running after work. What is your secret!

Not much of a secret really, I just don’t like to get up any earlier than I have to in the mornings. I really love my sleep! 😊

Props to you! I am the same in that I always run in the evenings except for a long run on the weekend (when I’m running of course) which usually isn’t any earlier than 8am. The ironic part is I work from home/have flexibility with my hours, so I could easily run in the morning then start work. I’ve just always physically felt more awake/loose/hydrated to run later in the day than to try to run first thing in the morning. Given we’re looking at temps around 90* starting next week though I may have to reconsider my game plan for the summer. I may work a few hours, log off and go run, and then resume. That’s all of course pending when I’m fully cleared to run again! For now I’m on my walk/run plan and I’ve been doing that after work.

That’s awesome that you work from home and have flexibility in your schedule. I hope you’re able to run pain-free again soon!

I run at different times, when I can! Sometimes work is 3 am so that’s not gonna happen, but on my days off I love a morning run!

Oh wow, 3 am is super early! I guess you have to be flexible with your schedule.

I prefer to run in the morning; mainly, as a mechanism to get the run out of the way. The later it gets in the day, the more reasons I find (or makeup) NOT to complete the run.

It’s a great feeling when you finish work and don’t still have to run, then everything else after the run (stretch, shower, etc.).

For me it’s morning or bust. Could be running, cycling, kickboxing, lifting… any exercise must be done in the early a.m. or I’m probably not going to do it. Thankfully, I’m a naturally early riser and my gym has lots of great 5:45 am classes. Welcome to the club!!

Yes! Welcome to “our” side! When I worked, I had basically the same routine as you, but I showered at the local rec center, which was right next to my school. I liked to get to school by 7:00 at the latest, so I had to start really early. The night before, I packed my work clothes and stuff to take a shower in my gym bag, my breakfast and lunch, and laid out my running clothes and headlamp. Lots of organization, but still better than running after school when I was already tired.

Not a runner, but I go for walks daily. I alternate my schedule between morning and afternoon, depending on the weather: walking in the morning in the summer, afternoon in the winter, and avoiding rain where possible.

That’s great to be able to be flexible!

Since I don’t work, I can sort of cherry pick when I run. I say sort of, because I still have other obligations and sometimes they still get in the way!
I’m a morning person, and when I started to run I often ran early in the morning in the summers. Somehow the last few years that just gets harder & harder for me.

I can see that happening!

I’m not a morning person either, but for the past three years I’ve run on Wednesday mornings at 6 a.m. There’s something pretty cool about being done with your run before most people wake up. Not that I want to do this every day. 🙂

I know what you mean as far as not wanting to do it every day, but it is nice to be completely done with my day once I leave work!

I may or may not have THE EXACT same (before you switched) situation going on. I really need to take advantage of my work showers and the fact that my work is literally a block away from the beautiful bike path I do long runs on in the summer.. But mornings are hard lololol

I agree- mornings are hard. I really don’t see how people get out to run at 4 am.

I’m currently lucky in that I can sleep, run in the morning and then go to work (albeit working late into the evening). But when I no longer have that luxury, I’m going to remember this post. I hope my future workplace has showers! Glad you found something for those hot summers, Donna!

You are lucky indeed! I envy people with more flexible schedules, although mine isn’t too bad. Thanks, Dorothea!
